Hello July.
A mid-month Monday morning missive to bring you the happy news that JF & I were asked to write a duet for Strangers On A Bench! Do you know this podcast yet? Where Tom Rosenthal strikes up intimate conversations with strangers on benches? It’s one of my favourites and I’m not alone in that. It’s reached the Top 10 in the UK charts and won awards and been featured in The Observer and The New York Times and all the places.
There’s a brand new song at the end of each episode, commissioned to respond to the conversation. This week, episode 96, is the first time there wasn’t just one stranger sat on the bench with Tom, but two! A couple, in fact. And what better occasion for a JF & Lail reunion… Funny timing in a way, with each of us deep in the making of new solo records, but really fun to write together again. With a deadline! Which we missed. But compensated for in charm.

Later this month I’m back on the road with The Songs Of Joni Mitchell — Edinburgh, York, Cambridge Folk Festival — then to Montreal for August — and somehow moving flats in between. All that to say please forgive me if my letters continue to miss their first Sunday of the month deadlines for a while… I’ll make up for it in charm.
Happy summer holidays!
Lail
p.s. This is my 100th letter on Substack…

So good to hear your harmonies again! Looking forward to the solo albums.
Oh but I was so much older then
I'm younger than that now.
