I’m going to my first ever Hanukkah party tonight! My atheist Jewish parents deprived me of such candle-lit joys, but 30-something years later I have finally circumvented my way to the latkes.
I am also the proud owner of, dare I say it, my first ever Christmas tree. This is what happens when you have a baby with a Canadian. They are both (the Canadian and the baby) delighted by the tree. I should probably add that it’s about as small as the baby. It’s sparkling in the corner and growing on me.
I lied, it’s actually my second ever Christmas tree. My first Christmas tree is a mythological story from over 20 years ago. My parents were abroad, somewhere far away, so my little sister and I seized the opportunity to buy and decorate a tree in their absence. Ultimate teenage rebellion. (Santa came).
To soundtrack these tinsel-draped anecdotes, here’s JF & I bashing our way through Everything Is One Big Christmas Tree by The Magnetic Fields. If you are not familiar with this joy of a band, my Christmas present to you is their entire back catalogue. Go listen to it all, preferably with a large glass of mulled wine!

Meanwhile I’m on track to hit my (secret, modest) target of paid subscribers by the end of the year… Thank you so very much to anyone who has already upgraded… Here’s that alluringly clickable orange button in hope it might tempt you to consider…
Whatever you are or aren’t celebrating this year, I hope you’re keeping warm in these freezing times / keeping cool in these heated times.
Happy everything,
Lail x
p.s. This time last year JF & I wrote a song called First Christmas for The Line Of Best Fit’s festive compilation. It was Milo’s first time flying and also our first flight since the pandemic... Nice to have this home/music video to remind us…
