I recently stumbled upon Margo Guryan by chance, you might like her as well! And I re-created some of my old mix tapes as playlists on Spotify (don't we all still remember the exact order of the songs on these tapes?), it's fun!
Ana! So glad I'm not alone in this! Will download your playlist + Michael Hurley right now! It's so ironic how we are stuck when there is SO MUCH to listen to...
Sigh. You think you have difficulties accessing music. I discovered yours from Radio 4's Late Junction which I used to put on at 11pm and record on tape when I went to bed, then listen to next day (fast-forwarding the Mongolian throat music and other less hummable items) and re-recording the best items (eg Everyone is Moving to Berlin) onto another tape. This was in the days when you could get radio cassette players with twin tape decks. My point is, I can't move on and I'm stuck with about 35 home-curated tapes of 'best of Late Junction, cerca 2000 to 2016' and the CDs that I bought on the strength of items listened to there. It's a fine collection but where do I go now but nowhere?
I’m so honoured to have been discovered and upgraded in this analogue way! It’s so much more exciting and invested than clicking the heart button next to a track on Spotify! But yes, ok, maybe not the most practical way to move forward… I feel you… Perhaps you will have to bite the bullet with a streaming service… although I do hear tapes are back!
Number one,may this be your most daunting problem in life. Try out Molly Tuttle and Billy Strings. They are both going to be over in England soon. Great live shows, phenomenal pickers and good song writers.
Pleasure reading, and yes a pleasure to have Jonathan Richman in the CD player of the dust covered car and the broken plastic box in the glove compartment…
I remember a couple of years ago Alma & Linus, Mariscal’s teenage twins, fell in love with New England - they had never heard of JR before that ride on the dirt road.
For some reason, Spotify suddenly thought I'd like to hear Patsy Cline, early Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette and another country-singer woman whose name I can't recall ever having heard of - LeAnn Rimes, 'Blue'. Spotify was right: Trumpland politics are odious, but some of those voices....! I have to confess a tendency to like Willie Nelson & co. on occasion too - but don't tell my son.
I’m in exactly that mood! Will investigate immediately. And probably the obvious remedy to a lot of my malaise is to subscribe to more music discovery substacks like yours!
Wow guys! I'm going to make a playlist based on all your recommendations and some new discoveries from music Substacks -- keep them coming and I'll keep adding! Will share it soon. (Also, who else should I subscribe to for inspiration? Preferably in the vague vicinity of my musical wheelhouse...)

I know right, good problems! Looking forward to checking these two out presto!

Already been to Paris, already been to Rome (dum-de-dum-de-dum-dum-da-dum-day)
And what did I do but miss my home? (Oh-oh New England)
What’s not to love!!

I love Patsy and Dolly and Tammy… never realised all their names end in Y! Tell your son Willie Nelson awaits him!
Today... Etta James!!
At last!
If you're in the mood for a little indie-pop/shoegaze, Seablite's new record "Lemon Lights" is fantastic.
I’m in exactly that mood! Will investigate immediately. And probably the obvious remedy to a lot of my malaise is to subscribe to more music discovery substacks like yours!
Right on! Thanks for subscribing, and let me know what you think of the record.
