Biographies, a rap.

17

In last week’s message from the beach I mentioned Vivian Gornick’s memoir Fierce Attachments. Your replies reminded me of a wild song I wrote a few years ago and have yet to record. It’s still one of my favourites, but I have no idea what to do with it. By that I mean I haven’t worked out how to produce it in a way that doesn’t sound like Joni Mitchell trying to rap. It’s called Biographies. It’s about everything. Maybe you’ll relate. Click above to listen to the highly imperfect acoustic rendition I recorded yesterday. And here are a few of those musical biographies I’ve loved a little too much…

Just Kids by Patti Smith — check out her fantastic Substack!

I’m Your Man by Sylvie Simmons — this inspired my song for Leonard Cohen!

Positively 4th Street by David Hajdu — on Joan & Mimi Baez and their lovers…

Stories I Might Regret Telling You by Martha Wainwright — I just finished reading this last week!

Would love any other recommendations…

And any production ideas for the song!
